What is Freeze Dried K9 Natural ?
Freeze Dried food is the only method K9 Natural will use to make their food shelf stable. By that we mean it can sit unopened for up to two years (refer to use by date on packs) and remain as fresh as the day it was packed into our foil bags. We have explained that in nature, dogs do not cook their food. At K9 Natural we too wanted to stand by those core values and take natures lead. In doing so we have spared no expense in making sure our product reaches you in a fresh, raw form.

So how did we achieve the preservation of raw food without artificial preservatives?
We used natures knowledge and physics to give us the answer.
Everyone knows that bacteria needs moisture to grow. Ultimately, if we remove the moisture, bacteria cannot grow so therefore food does not degenerate or go off.

How did we remove the moisture without cooking the food?
We used a process called Freeze Drying and the important point to remember here is the word Freeze (which means cold in : this case as low as -50ºC to – 80ºC). Many people are claiming to have raw products by dehydrating them using warm air. But a conventional oven uses warm air and humans use those to cook ! Unless the products are freeze dried they are no longer classified as RAW. We know if we heat things up we start that cooking process. But by freeze drying food we do not...it is really as simple as that.

For those who don’t you can be assured the K9 Natural food is still RAW and full of nutrition even though it has sat on a shelf, until you add the warm water your product will remain stable and fresh, just like any other raw meat based product.

RAW VS COOKED
Almost all commercial dog food products are cooked in some way. This includes products such as kibble and biscuits (which contain high levels of grains and are therefore baked), but also less-obviously cooked products such as canned foods, dog rolls and ‘air baked’ products.

K9 Natural is different; it’s entirely, 100% raw. Why? For the simple reason that heat can destroy or dramatically alter the nutritional levels in food, including vitamins, minerals, protein and many other beneficial attributes. Cooking is entirely unnecessary and undesirable. A dog fed a diet of cooked foods is not getting the nutritional quality it deserves, while a dog fed a raw diet is benefiting from nutrients in their most natural and potent form.

We know that as a raw food, K9 Natural is nutritionally more appropriate than cooked products. How then does it stay fresh? It stays fresh for two reasons. Firstly, K9 Natural contains cod liver oil - a natural preservative. Secondly, once all the raw ingredients are blended, the mix is blast frozen, a process that locks in all the natural goodness. K9 Natural remains raw -either frozen or freeze dried - right up until the time your customer feeds it to their dog (or thaws it before feeding).

Even K9 Natural Freeze Dried products are not cooked. The freeze drying process simply removes the moisture content and at no stage is heat applied. The product returns to its original, fresh, raw state when water is added at feeding time.
